Where you there? Did you feel the energy exploding at the first ever Susan G. Komen Philadelphia Race for the Cure® Metastatic Breast Cancer Tent? Well, I was there. In 2003, I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. At that moment, I was unaware of many organizations that could support my need for information regarding breast cancer. Now, however, that is no longer my story. Not only do I get to receive reliable information from one of the nation’s breast cancer leaders, I get to be a part of a helping others like myself that have been diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer.
At the Komen Philadelphia Race for the Cure, I was so overwhelmed at the special opportunity I was given to be a member of the Metastatic Breast Cancer experience. So many women, family members and friends stopped by to receive a mini education on what it means to be diagnosed with such a difficult disease. There was such personal comradery. I shared. I cried. I met women inside the tent and at the invisible border of fear outside the tent.
This amazing experience was not a one-day occurrence in the Komen Philadelphia community. The organization is now gearing up for its metastatic breast cancer symposium. So, mark your calendars. Put a gold star on the date of September 16, 2017 and get ready for great speakers, health information and meeting women like yourself who are living with metastatic breast cancer. We need to continue to confront the issues that we face. We need reliable resources, expert medical advice and support from one another. We need organizations like Susan G. Komen that invest by giving research dollars, by providing educational resources and by bringing empowerment to women like myself who have been diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer.
Come, continue the Race with me on September 16, 2017 at the 2nd Annual Komen Philadelphia Metastatic Breast Cancer Symposium. Bring your support team of family members and friends. Let your peers know that it’s time to be empowered, educated, and equipped. Join me that day. I’ll be there with my friends! Registering for the Symposium is easy and the event is free.
